When a leak should stop appliance use immediately
How to think about water leaks from washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, and freezers before they damage floors or cabinets.
Active water changes the priority
A drip under a dishwasher or washer can spread into flooring, baseboards, cabinets, and walls. If water is actively leaking, stop the cycle if it is safe, shut off the nearby water valve when you can, and keep the area dry until the cause is checked.
Different appliances leak for different reasons
Dishwasher leaks often involve door seals, spray patterns, drain issues, or overfilling. Washers can leak from hoses, pumps, tubs, valves, or oversudsing. Refrigerators may leak from defrost drains, ice makers, filters, or water lines.
Do not keep testing a leaking appliance
Repeated test cycles can turn a small repair into water damage. If the leak returns after one basic check, treat the appliance as out of service until the source is found.
